State of Culture is a program framework for contemporary Australian music that discovers, develops, networks and connects outstanding emerging culturally diverse musicians to the Australian music industry. The State of Culture program has evolved in response to demand from culturally diverse artists for greater support, representation & participation in the music scene. The programs key objective is to increase access, opportunities and pathways for inspiring emerging and refugee artists to participate in the Australian music scene, contributing significantly to our music ecology. It has been developed through extensive consultation with refugee & emerging artists & professional industry mentors.
The State of Culture program includes the core project streams; Visible, ReMastered Myths, Forums & Workshops, and Showcase Platforms, as well as Touring and International Collaborations.
Over the last decade, Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) has strengthened the musical ecology of Australia by creating pathways for artists from refugee and Indigenous backgrounds into band-rooms, recording studios, radio stations and onto stages, linking them with top musicians and producers. This program has visibly contributed to the Australian sound, proud and representative of the reality of our diverse make up. The Visible Music Mentoring Program is part of MAV’s State of Culture Music Program.
In addition to producing a yearly compilation album of mentor and mentee participants, MAV launched its Visible Record Label in 2014, offering artists who have been through the mentoring program to record, release and market their own EP, available on MAV’s Shop.
Visible continues to grow and expand with an ongoing mission to link participants with established producers, musicians and industry experts to open pathways and networks across different sectors within the music industry. With boundless opportunities and advantages to both mentor and mentee the venture enriches their practice through cultural exchange of diverse musical style, rhythm and groove.
Multicultural Arts Victoria (MAV) works in partnership with the Creative Industries and the wider community to make opportunities available for performance through the program, partnerships and brokerage, locally and internationally. Opportunities have included regional touring, various Festivals and events across Victoria including, Melbourne Festival, St Kilda Festival, Queen Victoria Night market, Victoria’s Multicultural Festival, Premiers Gala Dinner, New Year’s Eve at Fed Square and, interstate presentation opportunities including, Nexus Arts and Mona Foma. Other presentation platforms have included Melbourne Recital Centre, Arts Centre Melbourne and MPavilion as well as Live to Air.
