““Faded, but still there” is a series of seven digital works exploring the notion of home – it can be a physical place where one can live, but it can also refer to the community, online forums and memories that trigger nostalgia.
Pandemic situation, home isolation, inability to reunite with family, and politics have pushed people, who are away from homes, to seek out online forums, where they share their experience, memories and images of their hometowns to stay connected.
Based on my recent experience from these online forums and my ongoing art research on memory, I have collaged short poems, film photos and scratched cellophane works to metaphorically reimagine and retrace homes of mine and others.”

ABOUT Ellen Yeong Gyeong Son
Having lived in Korea, Singapore and Australia, Ellen Yeong Gyeong Son occupies a complex cultural position as a trans of beyond culture. She is interested in exploring transcultural diasporic identities and their memories.
She often utilises cellophane in her practice as a culturally filtered lens and representation of cultural values that may impose on individuals. The act of scratching on the surface of cellophane are her metaphorical method of erasing, inscribing, layering and censoring borderlines of the unique cultures, as well as the memories of these cultures that one may possess.
Son has received many grants and awards, including National Gallery of Victoria Women’s Association Award, Knox City Immerse Festival The Best Young Artist Award, City of Yarra Small Project Grant, and Chapman & Bailey Award. Son has received Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours (First Class Honours) from The University of Melbourne in 2017.
