After three incredibly popular events earlier this year, and in response to overwhelming demand, The Southbank Dawn Raga Series is back with a summer edition kicking off on Human Rights Day, on Tue 10 Dec 2019.

Come along to sooth your ears and soul in the bright, warm morning delight. A journey through tranquil and uplifting Indian music from local and international Indian musicians will energise and prepare you for the day ahead.

These Dawn Ragas will take place outdoors on the Arts Centre Melbourne Main Lawn and are designed to elevate your mental state with blissful Indian classical music.

To enhance the summer series, Arts Centre Melbourne and Multicultural Arts Victoria have partnered with the City of Casey to also present a Dawn Raga Series in Bunjil Place, Narre Warren on alternate Fridays across February and March.

A raga is the melodic framework for improvisation and composition. It is based on a scale with a given set of notes, a typical order in which they appear in melodies, and characteristic musical motifs. By using only these notes, emphasizing certain degrees of the scale, and by going from note to note in ways characteristic to the raga, the performer sets out to create a mood or atmosphere that is unique to the raga in question. There are several hundred ragas in present use, and thousands are possible in theory.
