Nangarna Project 2016

October 25, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Nangarna Project 2016

Seeking Expressions of Interest to participate from men from newly arrived refugee backgrounds.

Nangarna is a unique new project conceptualised by Yorta Yorta man Neil Morris to offer a traditional Indigenous Welcome to Country and journey of connection to country on traditional lands in Shepparton for 10 newly arrived refugee men.
Over a series of 4 sessions, Neil will work with the men to develop an understanding of Indigenous ways of being and what it means to appreciate country from an Indigenous perspective. They will have opportunities for powerful intercultural exchanges around finding ‘home’ after displacement and will be mentored by Neil and Congolese born poet Wani Le Frere, to develop their own personalised, localised ‘mother tongue’ Acknowledgements of Country.
Acknowledging traditional custodians of land is an ancient practice in Australia. It has however only recently re-emerged, and is of great significance to Indigenous people as one part of ending the history of dispossession, colonisation and exclusion that lies at the heart of Indigenous disadvantage today.
