Cookin’ Up Community #1

July 23, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm

$10 – $15

In our popular cooking demo and storytelling event, Cookin’ Up Community #1, join businesswoman and talk-show host Husna Pasha and Kurdish Australian musician Fadil Suna in a fusion of cultural exchange, culinary feast, and live music performances.

Fadil will warm the guests’ taste buds with his famous traditional Kurdish soup and mesmerising sound of his oud; and Husna will bring the flavours from the streets of India with her pakoda demo and will also share her personal story of emerging from adversity to becoming the powerhouse that she is today.

Food and stories bring people together. Join us on 23 July at 6 – 8.30 PM at Collingwood Community Kitchen in our popular cooking demo and storytelling event.

Fadil is a Kurdish born musician who has called Australia home since the 1980s. Fadil is passionate about music and excited to share his culture through its universal language.
He moved to Australia in 1985 and joined Koma Denge Kurd as a vocalist. He sings in several languages including Kurdish, Turkish, Arabic and Armenian. He has compiled over three thousand classical, traditional folk and spiritual Kurdish songs in 5 volumes. Fadil is currently coordinating and teaching an AMES funded dance and song class for the Kurdish Resource Centre of Victoria. In 2000 he studied Music Theory and Practice at NMIT. Fadil has appeared for Music Deli on ABC Radio, and for the SBS Kurdish program. He is one of the master saz players in the country and also plays oud, violin, santur and Middle Eastern drums.

Husna is a business woman, talk show host, media personality and now, the owner of Alisha’s Café Collective on Lygon Street, Brunswick East (east of the middle). Her cafe allows people to share food, create cooking workshops, invite local communities to share their art, music, culture and more. Husna will share her story of self-identity crisis that she grew up with and how she rose above the adversity of being different as a Muslim–Indian–Australian who arranged her own marriage. Her goal is to become the first brown Ellen Degeneres of Australia with the mission to bridge the gap between humans by creating happier people.
