Multicultural Arts Victoria presents direct from Australia to Ethiopia -
supported by the Australian Government through the Australia International Cultural Council, an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade
Multicultural Arts Victoria will be touring some of the most talented Australian musicians on the world music scene in Australia at present.
Lions on the Move is an extraordinary group of professional culturally diverse musicians, two of which are of Ethiopian heritage, Dereb Desalegn and Danny Atlaw Seifu.
Dereb and Danny will be performing and working with the key Arts and Cultural Institution in Addis Ababa - the National Theatre of Ethiopia - to create cultural links between Ethiopia and Australia as well as provide professional development opportunities for the artists from both countries.
Fundraiser
The group will be travelling also out of Addis Ababa to perform in a fundraiser for the Millennium dam project in Dereb Desalegn's hometown of Gondar
Dereb Desalegn has lived in Sydney for 12 years and often visits Melbourne.
He made a previous album with drummer/percussionist Nicky Bomba who he met through Multicultural Arts Victoria's Visible mentoring program that focused on a more traditional sound, with Dereb playing a lot of the Ethiopian one-stringed spike fiddle, the Masenko.
Dereb recently recorded his new record Dereb the Ambassador in a vintage studio, where every mic, pre-amp, every piece of gear was pre-1970s.
The result is a warm, slightly distorted sound similar to that of the great Ethiopian Soul Music recorded in the 1960s. The Ethiopiques is loved by many!
Danny Atlaw Seifu
Fellow Ethiopian Melbourne based musician, Danny Atlaw Seifu formerly from the National Theatre plays keyboards.
He is an accomplished musician who has held key positions in the music department of the National Theatre in Ethiopia and was trained at the Yared School of Music and has been based in Melbourne for the past 5 years.
They will be joined by Jonathan Pease guitar, and Matt Ottignon tenor sax, Peter Farrer - Alto Saxophone, Rory Brown- Bass guitar and Carlos Adura - drums. And guest percussionist Nicky Bomba.
