Elders of Melbourne's Koori and Somali communities with help from Multicultural Arts Victoria developed the Black Harmony Gathering, originally as a small backyard barbeque, to bring the communities closer.
Ousmane Sonko
Black Harmony Gathering has now grown to be a prominent Melbourne cultural festival.
"It was created to not only inform and enlighten non-indigenous Australians about how we feel as traditional people of the first nation in this country, but also for newly arrived and visiting black cultures. A lot of people here never got educated about the truth of our country or our people. The Black Harmony Gathering was created for everybody to become aware of everybody else and become accepting through that education." Kutcha Edwards
