What breed of dog is best? At ArtPlay we're all about mongrels, those mixed up mutts that celebrate the best of every breed.

We have 120 mongrels, part reshaped teddy bear and part children's imagination, coming to visit ArtPlay.

Artist Mai Long has worked with school students to create these remarkably playful pooches. Come and see!

Mission Mongrel Exhibition

The Mission Mongrel exhibition is the result of the Mission Mongrel workshop, and includes over 100 mongrel personalities created by participants from 5 Melbourne primary schools.

Each is uniquely individual and precious, and each makes an invaluable contribution towards forming a diverse and beautiful mongrel kaleidoscope.

Mission Mongrel Workshop

The mongrels are ritually produced within a messy time-based setting, using a specified variety of materials.

The process involves breaking a mass-produced calico bear before 3D reconstruction and modeling (2 hours), followed by a painting and decorating session with mixed media (2 hours).

The aesthetics and materials pay tribute to folk and ephemeral art. The concept of breaking and re-making is inspired by diverse cultural, religious, and philosophical constructs associated with identity, rebirth, transformation, and alternate realities.

The result is a kind of mythical mongrel that hides a secret bear.
