BACKGROUND
This collaboration has arisen after the showcase performance by tyc of E1 in
the Asian Arts Market in Singapore in June 2007. Following the performance, The Necessary Stage Artistic Director Alvin Tan and Resident Playwright Haresh Sharma
expressed a keen desire to work with tyc in the development of a longer-term
and meaningful collaboration.
As part of this development, they asked tyc to suggest Victorian actors - specifying an Indigenous Australian
actor, and a female actor plus multi-media artist.
The collaboration is proposed as part of a new creative intercultural
development and as a part of the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding
between Singapore and Victoria.
THE COMPANIES
The Necessary Stage
The Necessary Stage was formed in 1987 by current Artistic Director Alvin
Tan which aims to create challenging, indigenous and innovative theatre that
touches the heart and mind. It is one of the six Major Arts Companies
identified by the National Arts Council, Singapore.
The Company produces an
average of four original plays each year, devised pieces from a collaborative process that
is based on research, improvisation
and consolidation into a script.
The Necessary Stage is formally and practically committed
to international exchange and networking between Singapore and other
countries, including Japan, Phillippines, United Kingdom, Poland, Thailand
and its closer neighbours such as Malaysia, Indonesia and Australia
Tony Yap Company (tyc)
Tony Yap Company (tyc) is an ensemble of culturally diverse independent artists. Each artist is accomplished in their individual field of artistic discipline.
The vision is to create a multi-modal form that is intrinsically international in its artistic language.
Download tyc Overview
The unique artistic language that we have created makes
us effective representing an Australian-Asian experience in the contemporary
arts.
The direction for physical dance practice transforms ancient
shamanistic practice into a post-modern medium. tyc foster and continue
artistic and creative collaborations in the Asian region and to profile
Asian Arts in an international context. They create work that is unique in
that it allows evolution: they are constantly looking for a structure that
allows spontaneity within structure, work that is always fresh and current
and still within the original artistic framework.
