Kulcha Jam has evolved out of Multicultural Arts Victoria’s Visible project - an innovative arts mentorship program that has seen a wealth of new African Australian music talent explode onto the music scene in its four years, including rising hip hop stars Diafrix and Grrilla Step, the phenomenal Public Opinion Afro Orchestra, Ethiopian azmari musician Dereb Desalegn and many more.
Well known reggae artist, Nicky Bomba who has been a key musical mentor in the Visible project, sees Melbourne as the world music capital of Australia. He says the ideas, melodies, instruments and rhythms coming from artists in the Visible project have offer much to the Australian music scene - "There's a lot of established Aussie talent out there but we need to nurture these new people coming up that have made Australia their home - we need to connect the two with a view to creating a new Australian sound," he says.
Kulcha Jam aims to do just that - connect musicians, connect people and create a platform for new Aussie sounds and styles in a relaxed, grass roots atmosphere where punters can sip on a range of exotic African beers, get up and boogie and taste some delicious Ethiopian cuisine...
