A WORLD OF POETRY IN MOTION
Poetry in Motion is a dynamic and innovative literary and culturally enriching experience offering: presentations on the literary translations of : Dante, Cavalcanti, and Calvino.
Poetry inspired performances, poetry read in the original and in English translation, academic presentations, and engagement with the audience by linguistic experts.
PROGRAM
This free three-event program (30 May, 5 & 9 June 2007) include professional readings of classical poetry, informative discussions, music and art works inspired by the poetry , and contemporary poetry readings by Melbourne poets.
"Poetry in Motion is the only event in Victoria, if not Australia, which focuses on both classical & contemporary bi-lingual poetry.
The synergy between poetry and the Arts is set to become part of major artistic events in Australia". Says World Poetry Creative Director Lella Cariddi.
Among artists, poets, linguistic experts and translators are: Professor Domenico De Clario, Head of Fine Arts, Monash University, who will present "a calvinian architecture" , dealing with various approaches to translating the literary works of Italo Calvino.
Bruno Leti, painter, printmaker, and book artist, will speak on the subject of his awarded 2007 Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria, "The Cross and the matrix."
Translation invites one culture to another culture’s party.
'It can open out to us from an unknown heart.’ Says Chris Wallace-Crabbe, well-known poet and translator, University of Melbourne who will do a presentation titled " Struggling with the Master" Translating the poetry of Dante Alighieri, to be followed with a reading of Dante's Purgatorio.
Poet, Italianist and Translator Dr Simon West will speak on "The Ins and Outs of transalting Guido Cavalcanti" with a reading in English and Italian.
Last, but not least, there is poetry@fedsquare where local poets will share the stage with The Alea Ensemble, which comprises (Gianni Montalto HarmonicVoice, Mary Knights-Rutten Violincello, Paul Watt Tabla and Harmonium, and Didgeridu player's name (tba). Alea blend and re-invent western and eastern music traditions to create haunting original pieces. Through musical improvisation over several months of this project, they meditate on the highly evocative poetry of Lino Concas, a Sardinian poet, who now lives in Melbourne and has penned significant work on Aboriginal Australia.
