SQUEEZE
How do you make two accordionists play in time?
Shoot one of them.
What’s the difference between an onion and accordion?
People cry when they chop up onions
What did people say when the ship loaded with accordions sank in the ocean?
Well, it’s a start...
Enough with the accordion jokes! In Squeeze, the accordionists fight back, cabaret-style, in an event that celebrates the many voices of this most versatile instrument! In the louche cabaret surrounds of Northcote’s Open Studio, some of Melbourne’s finest musicians -
Anthony Schultz (Frock),
Dave Evans (The Band Who Knew Too Much),
Sofia Chapman (Vardos) and
Svetlana Bunic (Circus Oz),
will articulate the winsome ways of the accordion in music from Argentina to Alice, Texas; from tango to Tex Mex.
Our accordionists will be accompanied by Tamara Murphy on double bass and Hugh Harvey on drums/percussion. Sofia and Svetlana are Freshly Squeezed, a duo playing high octane party music of eastern Europe. Anthony Schultz will take you to Argentina and improvise over his original compositions. Dave Evans will lead a whirlwind tour through klezma, French musette, Tex Mex, and the music of Italy and Macedonia. Squeeze is inspired by Annie Proulx’s novel Accordion Crimes (but will hopefully be a lot less tragic). It is a one-off event.
