Our motto: "BROTHERHOOD IS NEVER SIMILAR APPEARANCES, BUT THE MUTUAL USEFULLNESS"
IMPALA is an African community group that was set up in Melbourne by new arrival migrants from three African countries - D.R.Congo, Burundi and Rwanda. Experiencing long stays in concentration camps, exposure to ethnic differences and loss of cultural values for their families. These migrants decided it was time to step forward, revalue their culture, custom of traditional heritage and identity. Impala believes that their cultural practices bring together African communities to share their experiences and support one another to rebuild their viable cultural values.
These interactions are a useful source of information for social networks, and serve as a relief to social isolation.
"We do not only remember the past but we learn from it and prepare for the future. We encourage love, respect and unity among our people regardless of ethnicity, nationality or physical appearance. Our songs and dances as well as our art works, each has the meaning, we inherited them from our ancestors and we wish to pass them to our children". Ildephose Kinyango. (Coordinator of Impala Project)
