JUDGES AND HIP HOP ARTISTS COMBINE FORCES TO CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA’S DIVERSITY

'FUSION - Arts & Law' will launch this year's Victorian Arts Law Week - where judges and hip hop artists will combine forces to create never-seen-before performances. FUSION kicks off at 6.00 for a 6.30pm start at the Arts Centre, ANZ Pavilion, on Monday 7 May 2007.

FUSION will showcase debut performances by four highly acclaimed and culturally diverse artists. Joel Ma from 'TZU', MCs Azmarino and Momo from 'Diafrix' , Elf Tranzporter and Mita & Reuben Kaa as '2XL' have collaborated with some of Australia's most brilliant legal minds to create original work focused on human rights - this year’s theme for Victoria Arts Law Week. Justice Michael Kirby AC CMG, member of the High Court of Australia, Justice Marcia Neave AO, Judge Felicity Hampel and Julian Burnside QC, have each provided the artists with an item of inspiration. The new Victorian Minister for the Arts, the Hon. Lynne Kosky MP, will also be attending. The event will be free.

    PERFORMERS

MCs Azmarino & Momo from Diafrix - a rare blend of new Australian urban with an African bent. Their music delivers rhymes that flow from English to French to Swahili and back again. Combine two parts Hip-Hop with one part Soul, add a twist of Dancehall and you are well on the way. Off the stage, an important component of Diafrix’ work is educating youth in schools and youth centres about racism, refugee issues and advocacy. See http://www.diafrix.com/

Joelistics (Joel Ma from TZU) MC, producer, multi instrumentalist and Ray Charles impersonator. Performed at Arts Law Week 2006 Launch alongside Justice Heerey. Joelistics' interest in hiphop grew out of an adolescent love for swearing and a natural lean towards social and political comment. As a teenager in the late 90's he was the antithesis of the Howard/Hanson version of Australia. Joelistics has acted in plays, had poems published in magazines, has facilitated workshops in schools and prisons and thought long and hard about the nature of reality. He considered a career in terrorism but discovered music to be much more effective. Joelistics has a well-earned reputation as an electrifying performer, equally at ease with an intimate spoken word audience as he is with a ten thousand-strong festival crowd. His attitude can best be summed up with this: "In my bat belt I've got three main tools: a dose of common sense, a sense of humour and a truck load of funk. My mission is clear. I'm here to change the world."

He is a member of one of Australia's most popular hiphop groups 'TZU' where he moonlights as a rapper, a producer and a raconteur. In his own words, "I'm interested in telling stories, in forging originality, in painting details that make us feel more human. I'm trying to coax forth the best qualities I can in my music. The parts of us that are proud to be different, that willfully fight against injustice, that love passionately and dream dangerously. The parts that are sublime, ridiculous and above all honest." See http://www.tzu.com.au/.

    Elf Tranzporter
MC/ BeatBoxer/ Producer / DJ - Born in Los Angeles, California, 1967 (Australian resident since 1992) Marlon Ray G. Porter, aka. Elf Tranzporter, (ex- MetaBassnBreath) maintains a prominent live-show presence within Melbourne's infamous hiphop, dub and electronic music scene accompanied by shows before large audiences in the US.

Combining musical, poetical and political realms, Elf blends a unique style of eclectic musicality with politically charged lyricism with a mission to "serenade the barricade" in his own words. Supporting Elf’s sonic journeys include schools and youth centres around Sydney, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra, The Basement, Sydney, appearing at the Big Day Out, 2001 and 2002, Channel V, Adelaide Festival 2002. The last two decades hail a range of collaborations including with Q-Bert, Black Eyed Peas, (S.O.B. '98 NYC, w/MB'n'B), Spearhead, Run DMC, and The Roots. Check out www.combatwombat.org and www.championnation.net for Elf’s solo and collaborative works.

Mita Kaa & Reuben Kaa as 2XL
From caberet to pop and back through rnb and rock, this duo performs true feel-good music with a hiphop edge. X-Factor finalists, Mita and Reuben perform as 2XL, blending Mita’s musical background of Stevie Wonder and Tom Jones, with Reuben’s rnb and hiphop influences. This eclectic mix resonates with soul, old school rnb, fused with the rhythm and rhymes of new rnb and hiphop.
