Multicultural Arts Victoria presents Do the Right Thing proudly supported by the City of Melbourne. Through hip-hop, reggae beats, afro-latino and soulful sounds, it will be non-stop music revolution for young Australians with all day boogying & sweat dropping for peace!
Held on Human Rights Day, this unique event promotes awareness and acceptance bringing together young people from different faiths and backgrounds to celebrate cultural unity and harmony.
Blue skies summer celebration, to get the whole city bouncing. Dynamic performers will get the party started with hip-hop, reggae, funk and soul acts, as the fuSIAN break-dancers warm up the floor.
FEATURED ARTISTS
Highlights of the day will include
Grrilla Step featuring DJ Dexter - taking hip hop to a new front with Pacific Islander log drumming, original beats, members of Melbourne’s underground Krump movement Royal Fam, Polynesian and West Papuan dance, plus Dexter dropping the freshest sounds in hip hop.
Illzilla - with one foot firmly planted in hip hop Illzilla create a sound that seamlessly blends reggae, old school funk, blues, classical and rock. Features acclaimed reggae producer Mista Savona.
San Lazaro - a refreshing change from the average Latin band, San Lazaro are bringing to the forefront some of the richest South American, Afro Cuban and Caribbean folkloric rhythms and fusing them with funk, rock, reggae and hip-hop to create an entirely original yet distinctly Latin style.
Dili Allstars - a high-energy seven-piece Funk, Ska, and Reggae outfit fronted by charismatic Paulo Almeida from East Timor and backed by a wicked rhythm section of percussion, bass, drums and pumping keys. This unique band combines an awesome live show with a social conscience and push for international justice.
fuSIAN - the extraordinary Pacific hip hop dance crew from Melbourne;s west.
Bhar El Ghazal Community Development Association in partnership with Multicultural Arts Victoria presents Let’s Discover Our Talent Band. A theatre and music project aiming to develop positive role models for young Sudanese people.
Marko Ashwil (Music coordinator) and Duncan Foster (Mentor) have worked together to create an exciting band that fuses the talent of local Sudanese performers. The band that emerged from the workshops will perform at Do The Right Thing.
ALSO exciting dance and music performances by newly arrived Congolese communities of Shepparton with mentor and well known Congolese artist King Bell.
Hosted by Aamer Rahman who recently starred in the hit Melbourne Fringe Festival show Fear of a Brown Planet. Don’t miss the Human Rights Hub with special demonstrations, cultural activities and giveaways!
