Shinjuku Ryozanpaku
This award-winning Japanese theatre company has toured the world. In December, as the final event of the 2006 Australia - Japan Year of Exchange they will visit Melbourne. Within the cloistered walls of their purple tent you will experience a night of dreams, the subconscious, old and new Japan, Shinjuku nightclubs, Kabuki traditional pop theatre, the ninja, ancient mythology, spectacular imagery, rock concert lighting, heart-rending original song and dance, outrageous humour, nostalgia, the Tokyo metropolis, innocence, corruption, surrealism, real life anime, horror, mystery and most of all fast-pace fun. It’s a world of poignant humanity on a roller coaster of wild fantasy.
Matasaburo - Angel of the Wind - by Juro Kara
Described as one of Shinjuku Ryozanpaku’s most successful performances, this play transposes the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus, the famous Miyazawa Kenji novel of the same name and the true story of a WWII flight engineer who disappears in a stolen postal aircraft, into the story of Erika and Oribe who chase Matasaburo, the mysterious ‘angel of the wind’ .
Juro Kara is the most important Japanese underground playwright of the post-war period. His plays have astounded generations of Japanese people with their unique wit, absurdity, commentary, surrealism and grimy realism of life in the metropolis. His work takes Greek tragedy, French surrealism and Japanese mythology and blends them into a mix of nostalgic vaudevillian anime. This Melbourne season is a rare opportunity to see one of the giants of Japanese contemporary theatre - don’t miss one of these four shows.
