Pentekostarion (Prayer Bells) is a major vocal work by Constantine Koukias, drawing on the rich choral traditions of Greek, Hebrew & Western Orthodox devotional music.  The work bridges the cultural and historical boundaries of these three divergent but highly related chant traditions.

Pentekostarion draws on the texts from Old and New Testaments and writings of the great medieval mystics to create a haunting ritual of Hebrew, Byzantine and Latin Cantori accompanied by eight male voices and a set of 61 handcrafted, quarter tone brass bells commissioned by the Federation Festival, Melbourne in 2001.

This work provides an exciting opportunity for audiences to experience music inspired by rich traditions presented in a contemporary musical setting. Prayer Bells is unique in the innovative way it brings a contemporary feel to a genre steeped in tradition, bridging not only the different cultures it represents but also generations of music composition.

The b cross cultural themes explored through bringing Greek Orthodox chant traditions into juxtaposition with Hebrew and Latin elements and a very contemporary approach to playing the especially commissioned handbells gives it b relevance in today’s troubled society.
