In Other Words

Bookings are now opened for In Other Words, the inaugural festival of poetry in translation.

This unique event bursts onto the Australian literary scene in Melbourne on August 12, 13 and 14, 2005 during the city's festive literary climate. It will be held at the emminent Centre for Ideas, at the Federation Hall of Victorian College of the Arts.

The festival's theme is Language, Place and Identity, and as such, pre-eminence will be given to indiginous writers and singers who are engaged in re-writing the language of their ancestors. They will re-interpret sentiments from an ancient history with the highlight being a paper presented by Jeanie Bell and Vanessa Fisher on the Aboriginal language revitalisation program.

All Australian and international poets, writers and traslators invited to the festival come with a wealth of experience and reknown. These include two major women poets from Asia; Wang Xiaoni from China, and Japanese writer Masayo Koike will feature as exponents of verse with a very special sensibility.

Journying to Australia from the northern hemisphere is Dutch poet, Arjen Duinker who has just been awarded Hollands’s richest poetry prize. Not all that long ago, Holland was refe rre d to as being part of the “Old World”. This poet, however, will impart a new slant on this singular art form.

In Other Words presents:

  • bi-lingual readings by poets and translators. They will be offered throughout the weekend and enhanced by musical accompanyment

  • literary translation workshops (held in the afternoon of Friday 12 August) followed by a free celebratory launch that evening with a keynote address by celebrated Australian poet Chris Wallace-Crabbe
