Diversity Week March 17-23, FREE EVENT
Multicultural Arts Victoria is working in partnership with the Victorian Multicultural Commission, Federation Square and SBS to present a dynamic program of music from all corners of the world as part of diversity week celebrations in 2004.
Squarebeats will highlight an eclectic mix of multicultural musicians and dancers, the best Melbourne has to offer.
Square Beats is a music feast of many music genres, ideologies and realms of the globe.
The main theme is unity in music through diversity of cultures.
Featuring performers from different parts of the world: Ghana, Ethiopia, Andes region of South America, Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador-this music concert is like the heart beat to the City Square that takes you on a roller coaster ride through the imagination and beyond.

The African Royal Drummers, led by Kojo Owusu, play royal music from all regions of Ghana. Music accompanies everything that happens in the palace and in the society. All information is communicated to the King and to the people through the drummer. This percussion orchestra performs a combination of royal, social and traditional sacred music and dance. Their vibrant, energetic music and infectious dance rhythms are guaranteed to make you move.
Sat 7th August @ 1.00- 3.00 pm INKA MARKA - energetic performances include traditional and contemporary music from the Andes region of South America, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador. The music has its own flavour, combining both traditional folkloric and contemporary styles of music, a mix that makes them different from other Andean bands. Inka Marka combine the haunting melodies of the Panflute and Quena with the rich string sounds of the Guitar, Charango and Violin, while their song repertoire includes ethereal and mystical melodies of the Inka nation, of times past and almost forgotten.
Sat 4th September @ 1.00- 3.00 pm The ETHIOPIAN CIRCUS BAND - is one of the most amazing and unique Circus groups in Australia. The group was originally established in Ethiopia and very soon achieved world wide fame. This unique group combines Circus acrobatics and performance tricks with exciting African dance and Ethiopian music in brilliant full colour costume. Their exciting performance is guaranteed to warm the heart and move the feet.
Sat 6 November @ 1:00- 3:00pm - WARAKO MUSICA - Australia’s most energetic and dynamic African music and dance band. Lead by internationally acclaimed African singers Passi Jo and Tchico Tchicaya, Warako Musica was formed in 1998, and has toured and played to packed audiences across Australia. Together with African and Australian musicians, they combine sensual Rumba and African Soukous grooves, with Cuban and Salsa styles. Lively lead guitar played by Tchico, and a relentless rhythm section keep audiences non stop dancing. The band showcases some of the best, most passionate Soukous dancing performed in Melbourne.
Sat 4 Dec 1-3pm - AZUCAR - Azucar is a dynamic 5 piece Latin group playing a range of infectious grooves including classic salsa, cha cha cha, cumbia and merengue.
