Ok-Hean Chang is a Melbourne based painter originally from Korea. Her works have been exhibited and collected widely in Australia. She was featured on SBS TV (Visions for 2001) and has received reviews in the Age, Sydney Morning Herald and other publications. The artist’ s main concern is to explore themes of identify, the subconscious and memory in contemporary society. Ultimately, identity is an emotional state composed of memories of emotions drawn from experiences across a multitude of places, many of which transgress and permeate national boarders. Her paintings invite the viewer to go beyond the image to a sense of recollection or familiarity that sits on the edge of consciousness. Of particular significance is the use of light, colour, texture and archetypal symbols, to reinvigorate the notion of identity and its unique, specific and essentially emotional quality. These aspects of the works encourage non-analytical engagement with the works with the aim of heightening the sense of connectedness with the works and the mediation between the works and the memories and emotions of the viewer. The artist draws on her life experiences in both Korea and Australia and embraces the hybrid nature of identity and unique artistic practice. ![]() Untitled
