Liz Cavanagh is fast earning a reputation not only for her captivating vocal ability and imaginative arrangements but the ambience she creates when she steps on stage.
At a recent Melbourne concert celebrating the musical talents of indigenous artists, one reviewer recently described Liz as ….. ”perhaps the performer with the truest jazz sensibility”.
Music has always been a strong influence in Liz’s life. Her earliest memories were singing gospel alongside her sisters at the local church.
Born in Babinda in North Queensland, Liz has spent the last seventeen years living in Victoria and calls Robinvale her home. Her father is a Wonnarua man and she retains strong links throughout Sydney. Her mother’s people are traditionally from North Queensland and the Torres Strait.
“All of my family were singers, my aunties, uncles, brothers, sisters and cousins. I didn’t know anyone who couldn’t sing,” Liz said.
Liz has just released her debut recording; a four track EP that breathes new life into a selection of Australian classics, by contemporary singer songwriters.
As the first indigenous person to have been accepted in to the School Of Music at the Victorian College of the Arts, Liz graduated in May, 2002.
