Little G - Koori, Kool ‘n Deadly
Rising hip hop star, Little G AKA Gina Chrisanthopoulos, draws inspiration
from her Aboriginal and Greek backgrounds when rapping, dancing and performing
and has been impressing audiences and record companies alike with her
unique rhyming techniques.
A hip hop night at a bar in Fitzroy opened her ears to the power of telling
her own remarkable story. Little G was hooked the moment she first heard
rap music. “I fell in love with it. From that moment I wanted to
be a rapper, I just loved the style,” she said.
The discovery came hand in hand with a new self awareness. “Being
Greek-Aboriginal I got racism from all sides, from my cousins and from
outsiders,” she said.
“I suddenly realised I was always ashamed of being part-Aboriginal
because of all the stereotypes. Then I learnt from an elder what my people
had been through, the massacres and all. I’d only learnt about Captain
Cook and the gold rush at high school.
“It really hit me. Now I want everyone to know how proud I am. I
want to tell young kids, don’t ever be ashamed of who you are. After
all we have been through we are still here today. That must say something.
We’re are strong people.”
Little G’s first rap was Yorta Yorta, named after the nation of
the Mildura-Echuca area where she’s still tracing her roots.
