Our Mission

To foster cultural diversity and respect through the promotion, enhancement and celebration of multicultural arts in Australia.

Multicultural Arts Victoria offers unique opportunities and support structures to artists and communities from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds as well as showcasing their amazing talents to the public at large.

Purpose

The three main dimensions to MAVs purpose are

  • to produce and promote an outstanding high quality culturally diverse artistic program,

Our Goals

Multicultural Arts Victoria encourages:

  • access and participation in the arts by all cultures,
  • acceptance and understanding of cultural diversity by all cultures, and
  • and excellence and innovation in multicultural arts practice.

Background

Multicultural Arts Victoria shares common ground with both the ethnic communities and the arts sector.

Working in partnership with many of Victoria’s leading multicultural artists, communities and arts agencies, MAV is positioned strategically between both sectors – providing an important bridge between culturally and linguistically diverse communities, artists, the arts industry and audiences.

MAV has successfully encouraged innovative program development and design that reflects the diversity of Victoria and has facilitated the development of linkages, networks and collaborations between existing arts and non arts providers, artists, agencies, organisations, and community groups.

Multicultural Arts Victoria has made a very big, creative contribution to the presentation and promotion of high quality programs and events that have invigorated and enhanced Victoria’s greatest strength, our diversity.

Multicultural Arts Victoria has a responsibility not only to multicultural artists and communities but also to the public at large in exposing them to all forms of art and educating them about cultural difference.

It is essential that we ensure access and participation and actively engage artists and communities from Non-English speaking backgrounds in the arts and celebrate cultural diversity as a State asset.

As a leading exponent of multicultural arts, MAV will continue to encourage excellence in the arts and it recognises that the organisation must position itself to meet the challenges of operating in a rapidly changing social and economic context.

MAV plays a critical role in providing a forum through the arts to ensure acceptance and understanding of diversity.

MAV has demonstrated through its program, operation and services that cultural diversity is a fundamental characteristic of Victoria’s identity and heritage and provides a valuable resource in shaping our state’s artistic future.

Philosophy

Multicultural Arts Victoria values cultural diversity in the arts as a necessary and integral aspect of Australia’s social and cultural fabric and believes that diverse cultural traditions form the building blocks of innovative and exciting new creative developments and programs.

Through the presentation and promotion of quality artistic programs Victoria’s position is enhanced nationally and internationally.

Long-term artistic growth and development has always been found in societies that value and respect their cultural diversity.
